Fostering Social Enterprises

How can Indonesia support the growth of social enterprises? What policies and approaches can build capacity for social entrepreneurship, including in remote and disadvantaged areas?

Social enterprises help promote more inclusive economies and societies. They create jobs, help tackle social and environmental challenges, and provide services for communities. Many social enterprises also open up employment opportunities for women and other vulnerable groups and engage communities and those who are excluded from the workforce through volunteering. While many are based in urban areas, social enterprises can also be found in rural and remote areas, where they support local employment and provide access to services for local communities. Indonesia has seen significant growth in social enterprises in the creative industry, agriculture and fisheries, and education. Given their potential to promote job creation and address social issues in communities, finding ways to support the growth and sustainability of social enterprises is an important policy challenge.
