Revitalization of Traditional Markets

March 30, 2019

The market is a part of social life, the growth of customary norms adapted to the habits of the region and develop into as place to conduct purchase transactions between sellers and buyers. These activities are a means of community activities. In its development, the traditional market is a market that is built and maintained by the central government, local government, state-owned enterprises, regional owned enterprises,  enterprises, and private parties where built kiosks, shops, tents and stalls owned or managed small traders, cooperative company or NGO that sell and purchase through the process of bargaining. (Presidential Regulation number 112 of 2007).

Denpasar, is one of 8 districts in bali and has a growing traditional market and one that strives for traditional markets to remain central in buying and selling transactions in society in general. Millions of people every day come and shop at traditional markets in bali. There are several traditional markets that are now known worldwide such as shindu market, badung market, sukawati art market, art market of ubud and kuta art market. These markets even become one of the tourist icon for Bali. A wide variety of items ranging from groceries, art supplies to various household needs are provided in traditional markets.

Although traditional markets in Bali exist with various packaging and provide a wide range of goods, but the traditional market is now beginning to be forgotten. Consumers are now beginning to pay attention to the health and habits aspects of goods or food provided by traditional markets, not approved by traditional markets that are slum and unkempt and collect existing crimes. The inconvenience of people to traditional markets greatly affects people's interest in shopping in traditional markets. this resulted in the decline of buyers in traditional markets, where with declining buyers will directly affect the income of traders (Balipost, 2009). price certainty is also an indicator of less interested people in shopping in traditional markets and choose to shop in the modern market.

If elaborated on the lack of traditional markets, then there are four things that can be explained, namely traditional markets that are considered as a slum or dirty place. According to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) related to water supply and sanitation, Indonesia is ranked 134th out of 163 countries with a score of 44.6 under Sudan and Tanzania (Yale University and Columbia University, 2010). Sanitation markets as one of the public places are part of urban environmental sanitation. From the figures shown by the EPI above that Indonesia's slum neighborhood is the highest factor affecting people not shopping in traditional markets. poor sanitation, poor utilization and maintenance of facilities in the market and a lack of public concern for the environment make people prefer to shop in the modern market. Traditional markets have poor security systems. Badung Market in Bali is a real example of a bad market security system in Indonesia. Non-fire alarm installation resulted in the burning of many kiosks and huge losses at the time. Security from the consumer side is also a constraint, not infrequently found the existence of thieves in action in the crowd busy shopping in the market. Traditional markets do not have a global look, although many foreign tourists are happy with traditional markets in Indonesia, but people will only go to traditional markets just to buy a lot of needs and at a bargain price but not for others. This transaction is because traditional markets do not have global properties that make consumers less attractive than the modern market. And the price of unstable goods, prices that tend to rise and fall to make the traditional market less trusted in shopping. Seasonal price increases make consumers turn to the modern market with a stable price range and better quality goods as they have passed the merchandise selection process.

The various shortcomings of traditional markets can certainly be improved and can be developed better. on various occasions, President Joko Widodo asserted that the traditional market that is not inferior to the mall and the local markets are not inferior to hypermarkets. see the spirit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, then how do we keep the traditional market can continue to run in accordance with our wishes together? Here's a solution I can offer for traditional markets in the future:

  1. Fixed any deficiencies that have been mentioned such as creating a clean environment, improve sanitation, improve security systems and maintain the price stability of goods so as not to happen the ups and downs of the price of a good.
  2. Applying charm charms that are safe, orderly, clean, cool, beautiful, friendly, memories with the aim to attract attention and change the image of traditional markets to be better and in demand by consumers.
  3. Developing tourism potential in the area and selling souvenirs according to the potential of the region. Like Bali, giving the original nuance of Bali that features art market, restaurant and uniqueness of traditional market in order to attract more foreign and foreign tourists to come and travel to Bali.
  4. Educate traders to be more friendly to every consumer. Merchant hospitality is emotionally influential to prospective buyers, so training is needed for traders to communicate better in offering products.
  5. Hold a market competition and give awards to increase the spirit of traders. This program has been carried out regularly by Denpasar, a traditional market festival that aims to motivate traders in the market and share knowledge for the community to be more familiar with the social order in society in transactions in traditional markets.

therefore, traditional markets are still indispensable, because many values in the transaction process, bargaining way, and social interactions that use communication as its intermediary. and a lot of values that should not be ignored as the nation's children that must be learned from us transact in the market. All the uniqueness and diversity of Indonesia exists and feels very sweet if we are willing and ready to preserve traditional markets.
