November 25, 2021

JAKARTA – Based on data collected by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), car and motorcycle sales have risen significantly in the third quarter of 2021. For one, the number of cars sold reached 234,070 units during this period, increasing by 110.65% from the same period in 2020, which recorded 111,120 units sold.

“Wholesale car sales in the third quarter of 2021 increased significantly, with car sales increasing by 13.38% in the second quarter of 2021, selling 206,440 units,” said BPS head Margo Yuwono in a press conference on Friday (5/11).

Margo elaborated that motorcycle sales also experienced a significant rise in sales in Q3 of 2021, with 1.52 million units sold, 28.76% higher than Q3 of 2020 which only saw 1.19 million units. In the previous quarter (Q2 2021), motorcycle sales rose by 15.65% with 1.33 million units sold.

The rise in vehicle sales is in line with the recent government incentive to put a new car tax rate of 0% and waiving the luxury goods tax (PPnBM) on vehicles, which are subsidized 100% by the government. This incentive, which initially would run until August 2021, has been extended to December 2021.

This tax incentive is applicable to all vehicles with 1,500 cc machine capacity. All 4x2 vehicles of up to 1,500 cc to 2,500 cc will be subjected to a tax discount of 50%. Vehicles in the 4x4 class of up to 1,500 cc to 2,500 cc are subjected to 25%.

The automotive industry is one of the leading sectors that contributes greatly to the economy. Up to 22 4x4 vehicle producers and companies currently operate in Indonesia.

“This sector has contributed an investment value of Rp 99.16 trillion, with a production capacity of 2.35 million units, per year and employs up to 38,390 people,” explained Industry Minister (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita on Friday (19/2).

Minister Agus also noted that there are 26 companies operating in the motorcycle production industry in Indonesia. The amount of investment of these companies have reached Rp 10.05 trillion with a production capacity of 9.53 million units per year, employing 32,000 workers in the process.
