Kemendag Holds Export Coaching Programs for Prospective Exporters in East Java
April 03, 2021
JAKARTA – Up to 40 businesses from various fields ranging from agriculture, fashion, food & beverages, and wood products participated in the Trade Ministry’s (Kemendag) Export Coaching workshops and verification programs in Surabaya on Tuesday (16/3).
The Export Coaching Program, or ECP, is a program that runs between 8 months to 1 year with the aim to assist businesses wishing to enter the export market. The program includes sessions on how to improve product quality, improve production management and market competitiveness, packaging designs fit for export, preparing, and developing workers for export activity, market development and finding potential new markets.
The Head of the Kemendag’s Export Training and Education Centre (PPEI) Heryono Hadi Prasetyo said that they are working together with the East Java provincial government’s industries and trade department as part of the program’s first phase in the region.
“We hope that going forward, the participating businesses are able to export their wares effectively and independently,” Heryono said.
Many businesses, according to Heryono, frequently face obstacles related to limited production capacity, human resource development, criteria fulfillment, marketing and acquiring the needed knowledge on both domestic and international export regulations.
“Through the ECP, we hope that the participating businesses could learn more on how to tackle obstacles that deter them from becoming effective exporting businesses,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Kemendag’s Director General for National Export Development Kasan commented that the businesses would be able to better understand export regulations and criteria as well as acquire information regarding possible export markets.
“The participants would be able to open paths to new export markets, assisted by the program’s export practitioners and experts,” he said.
According to the Head of International Trade at the East Java Provincial Government’s Department of Industries and Trade Eddi Wiyono, East Java businesses contribute greatly to national export numbers. Based on data by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), East Java is one of three provinces that contributed the most to national export numbers in January 2021, offering up to US$1.51 billion.
“Based on this, we can say that East Java is significant in bringing in foreign exchange through its superb foreign trade performance and export numbers,” Eddi said.
The East Java provincial government appreciates the fact that the Kemendag chose to hold its 2021 ECP programs in the province because it can help foster and develop new exporters and can potentially open new markets for East Javan businesses.
Last year, the ECP programs in East Java were able to produce 11 small-to-medium-scale (IKM) exporters from a total of 25 participating IKM businesses. The total export value of the 11 businesses reached US$336,000, coming from exports of furniture, coffee, breadfruit, wooden crafts, dried noodles, parquet flooring, food processors, cosmetics and beauty products, and flour and cassava-based products.
The main export targets for these businesses were the United States, Japan, the European Union, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Malaysia.
