Narrowing the Regional Disparities through the Aerial Bridge for Rural Areas in Eastern indonesia

2018

Abstraksi

It is undoubted that connectivity between each region has become a major factor of regional disparities within Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia such as Papua which is located away from the center of industrial activities and major cities of the nation although it has most of the national natural resources. The poverty issue within this region is largely due to the lack of access to basic needs such as education quality, healthcare, and clean water availability. To overcome such conditions, the government has attempted to narrow down the regional disparities from the national level through the “Sea Highway” program which was successfully initiated in 2015. However, the needs to fulfill basic services and resources in rural areas in Papua remained as a great challenge. Due to local infrastructure and geographical condition of Papua, air transportation is required distribute resources to the rural areas. Moreover, the distribution using large air cargo transportation requires longer runway airstrips such as in Wamena while the distribution to the rural areas may only be supported by smaller aircrafts, such condition resulted in slower distribution of the resources to the rural areas. Accordingly, a strong collaboration between government, private sectors, and local communities is needed to establish an integrated air transportation system that can provide basic resources and services distribution to the rural areas in Papua and Eastern Indonesia. Therefore, the access of basic resources can be improved in the hope of equalizing the living standard of the people living in rural areas.
