This paper presents discussions from a proposed research 4 development project by KOMPAK, on testing the application of Blockchain Technology for use in improving Village Level Data, such as the CRVS, Village Financial Data and Village Information Systems. Data at the village level are often fragmented, prone to being tampered with, underutilized as well as have issues of access by private citizens. Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology and by its nature is a decentralized database that improves transparency. It has drawn a lot of attention in recent years by both the development sector and the private sector. Blockchain has a lot of potential to improve efficiency of village level data, particularly in decentralizing to the stakeholders, creating more trust and timely updates. Despite its many benefits Blockchain is still a nascent technology and being tested in different fields to realize its full potential. KOMPAK and its partners are proposing to test in select intervention areas the use of Blockchain Technology in improving Village Level Data. A blockchain solution will be developed and compared with non-blockchain based village level data. This comparison would give us the ability to measure if technologies such as these can be applied in the development sector and what are the challenges and opportunities in doing so. The findings will also contribute to improving the management and storage of village level data, thereby directly contributing to the improvement of village governance.
