Climate Justice and Economic Disparity: Bringing Justice into Climate Policy for Economic Disparity Reduction

2018

Abstraksi

As an archipelagic country, Indonesia is highly vulnerable to climate change, especially on its coastal and underdeveloped areas (CUAs). This condition becomes more alarming by recognising that people living in CUAs fall under low-income people group; the most vulnerable group. Those vulnerabilities can indirectly widen the economic disparity gap. This condition is provoked by the fact that people on CUAs bear more economic burden than urban people due to climate impacts. This impairs the CUAs’ people economic growth, but in the opposite, will not affect urban people’s economic growth significantly. This means the economic disparity will widen between those two different groups. Instead, tracing back to the emission source, CUAs emit less emission than urban areas, but CUAs have to suffer more than urban areas, including the people. That evidence shows clearly climate injustice. Drawing from the problems, this research then aims at exploring and analysing climate injustice in current climate policies. This qualitative research will discuss the main question on to what extent the current climate policies have been able to contribute to justice in current development. This will apply desktop study and in-depth interviews with key persons, while the analysis will be framed under the climate justice theory. The expected outcome of this research is the evaluation of current climate policies for more just climate policies in order to narrow down the regional disparity gap.
