Generating income from tourism industry to provide basic education in remote islands: The case study of Hekaleka Ambon

Abstraksi

Purposes: This study does not only provide insight how the strategy of a social enterprise finance basic education in the post-conflict area but also to examine the role leadership play in cultivating human capital and organizational learning within businesses in a digitally disruptive marketplace. Method: Drawing from the case study of Hekaleka, this study discusses the role of leadership transition in a non-profit organization based in Ambon, which generates income from tourism business to finance the basic education in Maluku. This study takes research forward in two ways: firstly, through examining the role leadership plays in developing human capital and secondly through providing insight into the impact of transformational leadership, employee creativity, and HRD on organizational performance to meet the local wisdom in the province with hundreds of islands. Findings: The results indicate that introducing tourism industry to the local indigenous likes a double-edged sword. It may help the local community to provide public services, such as inclusive education. On the other hand, the capitalization of business opportunities may change the social structure from agricultural communities to services economy and from the peaceful environment to be more aggressive and competitive. Hence, the leadership plays a pivotal role to manage the balance of the interests among the competing stakeholders, which implies on the inter-organizational learning process. However, the leadership transition becomes the challenging issue for the learning process.
