Abstraksi
Cooperative is a legend and a myth in Indonesia. Cooperative has long been regarded as a form of economy which is most suitable for Indonesian context. Nevertheless, cooperative only contributes small percentage for Indonesian GDP. Furthermore, cooperative facing various external and internal challenges today. The external challenges facing cooperatives are the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, demographic bonus and informalisation trend of labor. In terms of Industrial Revolution 4.0, cooperative has difficulty in catching up rapid development of information technology. In terms of demographic bonus , cooperative is considered not attractive to young people. From the internal side, the current dynamics of cooperatives have not demonstrated adaptability to these external challenges. Most of the cooperative business models are still conventional which are dominated by three major types: finance, consumption and production. The business model has not developed since the past decades due to the low level of research and development work. As a result, cooperatives have stagnated from a business and institutional perspective. This research uses action research method. In action research, researchers describe, interprets, and explains a social situation at the same time by making changes or interventions for the purpose of improvement or participation. There are five stages in action research methods: diagnosis, action planning, action taking, evaluation and learning. At the Diagnosis stage, interviews and focus group discussions were carried out with various cooperative stakeholders and young people. The result is that rejuvenation of cooperatives is needed so that cooperatives can survive the challenges. In the Action Planning stage, planning is carried out regarding the cooperative rejuvenation method for two cooperative models: cooperatives with existing business models and new/disruptive cooperatives. Existing model cooperatives including savings and loan cooperatives, consumer cooperatives and production cooperatives. While new/existing cooperative models including start-up cooperatives/platform cooperatives and worker cooperatives. In the Action Taking stage, the cooperative rejuvenation process begins. For existing cooperative models, workshops on cooperative governance innovations were given, meanwhile various new/disruptive model cooperatives also began to be experimented. Some worker cooperatives and start-up/platform cooperative are growing. This new/disruptive cooperative model has a consortium namely the Indonesian Consortium for Cooperative Innovation (ICCI). This consortium consists of various new model cooperatives in Indonesia. The new model of cooperatives turns out to be able to attract more young people than the existing cooperative model. We are now working on the fourth stages of action, evaluation. This research uses a theoretical framework of The Three-Box Solution (Govindarajan, 2016). In this theory, there are three time zones; past (past), present (present) and future (future). These three time zones need to be used so that organizations can carry out current business activities well (high-performing business), but can still innovate to create the desired future. Savings and credit cooperatives, consumers and production represent the past time dimension. While new cooperative models such as worker cooperatives and start-up cooperatives / platforms represent the future dimension of time. The present dimension is represented by a series of processes for rejuvenating cooperative models and new cooperative models. There are two implications in this study. The practical implication is that this research can be used as a reference for decision makers to facilitate the process of rejuvenating cooperatives with supporting incentives and regulations. In addition, this research can help build a cooperative innovation ecosystem in Indonesia so that cooperatives remain relevant to the changing times. The theoretical implications are that this model can be tested or replicated in the context of other countries' cooperatives.
